What's on in Edinburgh: Events for March 2017
Planning to visit Edinburgh for a city break in the coming weeks? The air might still be cool, but our cultural and events calendar quickly heats up as we approach spring. Here are some stand out highlights and diary dates for March and beyond, ideal for anyone thinking of a mini break in Edinburgh.
Georgian Shadows & Edinburgh New Town (5.30pm to 8.30pm, daily until 26th March)
The city’s New Town turns 250 years old this year. What better way to celebrate than with a series of novel walking tours that delve into the area’s surprising history? Using inventive lighting and shadow characters, stories from the past will be conjured up to throw light (and shadow!) on the key sites, characters and events.
The show begins within St Andrew Square each day, continuing across various sites in the New Town area. A must see for history lovers or anyone curious about Edinburgh architecture, we think. See the Edinburgh.org website for site listings and further details.
Edinburgh International Harp Festival (31st March - 5th April)
Celebrating its 26th year, this event features spellbinding performances from an all-star cast of harpists in some of Edinburgh’s most enchanting venues. Largely possible thanks to passionate locals and volunteers, this is the place to hear the rich classical and folk traditions of this unique instrument. Click here for a full line-up of this year’s festival performances and classes.
Between Poles & Tides Exhibition (Talbot Rice Gallery, until 6th May)
An eclectic mix of modern artworks feature in this challenging and surprising exhibition, that examines themes of natural and manmade change, rhythm and discord, with a dozen key artists including Katie Paterson, Ian Hamilton Finlay and Llana Halperin. Each week of the exhibition also features a special in-depth focus on a single artist from those on show, with exclusive behind-the-scenes material. For more about the collection see the Talbot Rice Gallery website.
Edinburgh Gigs and Opera for March 2017
An excellent selection of performers and shows are lined up for the next few weeks in the city. Which tickets are the ones to look out for shortly? You could catch Elbow (March 12 & 13) or Elvis Costello (March 18), to name but two of the hotly anticipated acts in town. Or if you prefer a night at the opera, Ellen Kent’s La Boheme is on at the Edinburgh Playhouse on March 30th, followed by Nabucco on March 31st.
RBS 6 Nations Rugby at Murrayfield: Scotland vs Italy (Saturday 18th March, 13:30 KO)
Can Scotland finish the 2016/2017 Six Nations on a high? The final match of the tournament is all set for plenty of attacking rugby and a lively atmosphere against Italy. You could try the Scottish Rugby website for any remaining tickets- or enquire at the hotel. Even when matches are sold out or seats scarce at Murrayfield, a good insider tip is to register on the official waiting list for the chance to find returned tickets and late seats.
